5 Tips for Riding Your Motorcycle in the Winter

It’s no surprise that the weather in West Virginia can be very unpredictable in the upcoming months. West Virginians can start the day with sunshine, rain at lunch, and by the time you are heading home from work, there are already a couple of inches of snow on the ground. If you plan on riding your motorcycle during the winter months, keep these tips in mind.

  1. Proper Motorcycle Prep for Winter Riding. The basics needed for cold-weather riding arrives at element protections, such as a windscreen and handguards. If your bike is water-cooled, make sure the antifreeze is fresh and is adequately mixed. Also, make sure you have adequate tread on your tires for winter riding.
  2. Cold Weather Equals Colder Tires. Cold tires equate to limited traction. Riding helps increase heat in the tire, but even the briefest stop can quickly cool the tires down, providing a lack of traction.
  3. Watch For Wintery Road Conditions. Winter weather means salt, black ice, and new cracks in the road from snowplows. Bumps and potholes aren’t near as noticeable in cars as they are for motorcycles. Slow down as much as possible before hitting them if they cannot be avoided.
  4. Wear Correct Motorcycle Gear. Riding comfortably in cold weather begins with the correct gear choice, and it’s all about layering. When you ride in the winter, choose breathable layering pieces that allow the skin to breathe, taking away moisture.
  5. Increase Visibility and Following Distance. Assume you are invisible to other riders. Make yourself visible to other drivers by positioning yourself in their mirrors. Avoid blind spots and weaving through traffic and always ride with your headlights on, even during the day.
