Sharing The Road With Motorcycles

January 21, 2021 | Uncategorized

Motorcyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as any other driver on the road. However, because motorcyclists can be more difficult to see, it is important to take precautions to look out for motorcycles when driving. This is particularly important as motorcycles are less visible and less stable than cars, so when an accident happens, motorcyclists are more likely to be injured or killed, with many injured sustaining serious head injuries. To better share the road with motorcycles, remember these things:

  • Do not share a traffic lane with a motorcycle. While it may appear that there is enough room in the traffic lane, keep in mind that motorcycles need room to maneuver.
  • Be cautious when turning left. Nearly 50 % of motorcycle wrecks involve another motor vehicle with nearly 40 percent of crashes caused by the other vehicle turning left in front of motorcycles.
  • Always use your signals. Make sure to signal your intentions before merging lanes in traffic. This will provide a motorcyclist the ability to anticipate traffic flow and find a safe lane.
  • Keep in mind of road conditions. Anything from weather to small potholes can be minor inconveniences for cars, but are a major problem for motorcyclists. Certain road conditions which may not be an issue for cars will cause motorcyclists to change speed and direction.

As you are out on the road this year, be sure to look out for motorcyclists to ensure a safer ride for everyone. If you are involved in a collision with a motorcycle, contact the car accident attorneys at Manchin Ferretti as soon as possible.
